The Difference Between Psychotherapy, Life Coaching and Neuro-Transformational Coaching

There has been more and more talk regarding mental health lately.  With the pandemic and isolation, people are feeling the need to seek help.

Whether for depression, anxiety,  job loss, finding a new purpose or just someone to talk to, there is no shortage of qualified, certified, or willing professionals available to help.

Is it easier to just have a coffee with your best friend? Yes.

Will it help? Yes.

Will it help in the long run?  Probably not.

I’ve broken down the main three options for professionals to help you decide which option to turn to for best results.

Pros and Cons of Psychotherapy

noun: psychotherapy.
The treatment of mental disorder by psychological rather than medical means.

Psychotherapy is usually the first thing people think of when they need someone to help them.

It’s sometimes covered by insurance because it is usually regulated and licensed depending on where you live.

Friends and Family are a great start for referrals.

You can check your local psychological association such as the American Psychological Association or the Canadian Psychological Association

Psychotherapy is used to help your mental health and uses your past to understand your present.

Psychotherapists use therapeutic and psychological tools (such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) ) to help clients with healing trauma, overcoming abuse, treating addiction, or treating mental illness.

Working with a Life Coach

noun: life coach; plural noun: life coaches
A person who counsels and encourages clients on matters having to do with careers or personal challenges.

The practice of life coaching is getting more and more popular.  It focuses on setting and achieving goals, helping relationships, careers, and day - to - day life.

A life coach is a great person to turn to if you need help setting clear goals and getting accountability.

They are present and future-focused so they look at where you are, where you want to be and how to get there.

Like psychotherapists, life coaches use therapeutic and psychological tools to help clients in ways that benefit the body or mind and help wellbeing.

Life coaches are not registered or licensed, so you need to do your homework.  A good place to start is through the International Coach Federation. This organisation accredits certifications and coaches. They have a code of ethics with guidelines, accountability, and enforceable standards.

The Ins and Outs of Neuro-Transformational Coaching

Neuro-transformational coaching is a specific and unique form of life coaching that redirects thought patterns in the brain.

Neuro-Transformational Coaching or NTC is based on the principles of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

The NTC coach listens to what the problem is (what is visible) and then asks questions to learn what is not visible such as perceptions, attitudes, values, and beliefs.

They find the external events that caused your beliefs then help you to change the way your brain remembers the event. In other words, they help to communicate with the unconscious mind to change the behaviour at the root.

NTC is not regulated either and is considered a sub-section of Life Coaching.

Why I Became a Neuro-Transformational Coach

I have had experience with therapy, life coaching, and Neuro-Transformational Coaching and I found NTC did more for me than 10 years of therapy ever did.

I loved it so much that I just finished my Masters in Neuro-Transformational Results Coaching.
